Computer problems

Computer problems tend to scare me cause sometime I don't know what to do...for instance, what does it mean when the computer occasionally (once every few hours) 'beeps' (sounds like a short high pitched chirp) at you? And when it just showed a blank screen with a blue subscreen that said hardware problem found system was halted?
